Rise and Shine: The 6AM Selfie

To quote Garfield, “I hate mornings.”

I have never been able to get up early. I could stay up all night, sleep until noon, and be perfectly happy.

Unfortunately, being a full-time teacher doesn’t really allow for that. And I have struggled this year. As much as I know I would feel better if I had some time to myself in the morning- leisurely drinking coffee, maybe cleaning up for a bit, going for a run- (or at the very least, not flying out the door in outfits that can only be categorized as “not naked” then running in frazzled to teach my first period class.) I just. Cannot. Get. Up.

I’ve tried. I’ve gone to bed earlier. I’ve set my alarm super early. I’ve told myself. Just. Get. Up.

And I can’t.

But it’s reached a point where I can’t fail at this anymore. I need to become…

(scary chords…)

a morning person.

I came to the realization the other night after teaching full-time for six months that I’m not going to get much done in the evenings. I’m spent. I teach until 4, rush around teaching piano lessons, go home and get dinner ready… the usual. And then I’m done. And I don’t want to clean up or even hang out with my husband. I just want to go to bed.

So. Morning it is.

But as I’ve said before, I do better at a thing when it’s for art. And we can call this blog art, right?

And now, I present to you my photographic series: The 6AM selfie. It’s a work in progress, presented in daily installments. I figure if I have accountability, maybe I can get myself out of bed. Because once I’m up, I’m seriously fine. I started this morning. Here was the result:

Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful.

And then I wondered. Could we do this together? Maybe if we all go on facebook and twitter and post our 6AM Selfies, we can encourage each other. Hold each other accountable.

Want to join me? You can follow me on facebook and twitter, and post your pics each morning with the tag #6AMSelfies

I’m going to try to do this every day for the next month. It’s one of my challenges for Project 40. So come with me, and share what kind of difference it’s making for you! I’ll put together some pictures and stories (with your permission, of course!) write it up at the end of the month. Come on, everybody, let’s rise and shine!
